The Great Flood of '99: Kerala's Devastating Deluge of 1924

In July 1924, the Periyar River in Kerala, India, burst its banks, unleashing a catastrophic flood that would go down in history as the Great Flood of '99. The relentless rains lasted for three weeks, submerging vast areas of present-day Kerala, including Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Kuttanad.

The flood's fury was so intense that it washed away a entire mountain, Karinthiri Mala, and destroyed the road to Munnar. The aftermath of the disaster led to the construction of a new road from Ernakulam to Munnar, which still exists today.

The flood also ravaged the Kundala Valley Railway, India's first monorail system, leaving behind remnants that can still be seen in Munnar.

This video takes you back in time to revisit the Great Flood of '99, a calamity that reshaped Kerala's landscape and left an indelible mark on its people. #GreatFloodOf99 #KeralaFloods #PeriyarRiver #KeralaHistory #amalnwilson #entedtainment #greatflood
