In Passion (1982), Jean-Luc Godard creates startling beauty out of fragmented images without synchronous sound, juxtaposed quotations, Mozart's Requiem (1791), moving lamps, and portrait shots of the face.

Godard made two films in quick succession with Isabelle Huppert: Every Man for Himself (1980) and Passion. A reflexive interrogation of the creative process in the manner of Godard's earlier Contempt (1963), Passion depicts a Polish director in exile during the period of Solidarity and martial law. He struggles to make a film that cinematically restages iconic paintings.

In sequences like the one here, Godard attempts to bring together a number of mutually resonating pairs - elegant mobile takes and beautifully composed static shots, natural light sources and studio artifice, the two sides of divided Europe during the Cold War, male and female, music and speech, physical and sacred love - in a genuine montage.
