Film Study: Klitschko / Joshua, Setting up the right hand

We take a look at how @kltischko_official sets up his right hand against @anthony_joshua in their 2017 fight of the year candidate.

1. Klitschko’s lead hand serves a couple purposes:
a) Obstructs Joshua’s vision making it difficult to set up his offense or defense.
b) Acts as a range finder allowing Klitschko to know when he’s in range.
c) Draws simple defensive movements from his opponent to gain the upper hand position and make space for his famous right hand.

2. In the last edit, in round 9, we see Joshua start to ignore his lead hand, so much so, that Klitschko brings it all the way to his face and simply drags Joshua’s defensive hand out of position. It’s a small game of cat and mouse. Against stationary fighters, they are forced to do nothing and fight with limited vision or do something and risk getting tied up. More recently, McGregor / Mayweather has plenty of this type of arm wrestling early in the fight as did Campbell / Linares and many amateur fights.
