Beyond the Suffolk Downs Race Track's
Paddock and the newer Revere Police
Station behind the Target Shopping
Center is a small marsh Run-off under
The street that empties beside a mature
Maple tree and grass, which continues
along a pathway through the Wetlands
Behind the Police Station. The entire area
Is seeded with the Marsh Reeds known
To be an import from Europe that arrived
Here accidentally with the immigrants
To Massachusetts, and is an invasive
Plant in the larger Wetlands of the
Chelsea River, Mystic River, Island End,
And all over the tidal plains. That day,
Standing in the middle of this field, rushes
Talker than myself, hushed the sounds that
Carry until all i could hear was their swaying
Soft rattle in the breeze, and late afternoon
Providing orange, blue and purple hues.
It was a sweet spot tucked in the middle of
Everything - oasis like these still dot the area;
Finding them requires real time exploration-
Not even Google Maps is ever recent enough,
Either to show these little spots, or sadly, still
Show them before land development took over.
This is what has kept encouraging me to
explore Rumney Marsh...
