[Ep097] Hello everyone, this is TAKE. This time, I'm going to Hitachi Seaside Park, a spectacular day trip point from Tokyo, to enjoy the nemophila and look for nemophila blue ice cream. Nemophila is native to North America. Its English name is Baby blue eyes, and its flower language is “dainty,” “fresh heart,” “success everywhere", "I forgive you,” “success,” “majestic,” and “patriotism.” It is a very auspicious flower. Greek mythology introduces the story of a man who fell in love with a beautiful woman, Nemophila.
Why nemophila?
The Hitachi seaside park was used to be a bombing range for the U.S. military after the world war II. According to the park's public relations office of the park, when the ground was returned to Japan after 1973, the park was developed as a symbol of peace, and the nemophila was chosen as a view to forget the past by coloring the hill with blue that harmonizes with the blue of the sky and the sea. Since this area was a training ground, unexploded ordnance was also buried here, and after more than 20 years of processing it, the decision was made to bury the nemophila in 2001. So the nemophila hill was a symbol of peace in the area. Today, there are 5.3 million flowers planted and the view is breathtaking.
But how is this seed sowing done?
According to publicity, about 80 people sow seeds over two weeks in late November. In winter, they cover them with frost protection sheets. This will be done by 160 people per day by hand. In February, the sheets are removed by about 70 people over a period of 10 days. So there was a lot of hard work behind the beautiful hill.
Nemophila in my garden
Nemophila is a strong plant, and its Japanese name is “Ruri Karakusa,” and it is a flower that can be grown at home. Although I planted it once and left them alone, they have been blooming little by little every year (see the video).
Dogs and bicycles
Dogs can be taken everywhere in the park, but bicycles must be pushed except on bicycle paths. The area where you can ride a bicycle is wide, purple colored in the map, and in the soft early summer breeze, it is the best cycling experience.
Nemophila blue ice cream
Nemophila blue ice cream was sold at the foot of the hill where nemophilas are in bloom. Taste? It's a bit ordinary ice cream, but it comes with cookies and the design is quite nice.
Autumn is kochia
In the fall, this hill is all red with kochia, and it is the season for chestnuts. In the fall, I would like to introduce chestnut desserts.
