WHEN A CAVE BECOMES A TOMB : Mossdale Caverns Caving Disaster

The Mossdale Caverns Disaster is the deadliest caving disaster in British History. On June 24th 1967, 10 cavers entered Mossdale Caverns, 6 of them died. Rainfall had completely submerged the entrance to the cavern which meant the 6 remaining in the cave all drowned to death.

“The tragedy was complete, six of our friends, six most experienced cavers, had all died together, suddenly, and in terrifying circumstances. We had always feared the consequences of a severe flood in Mossdale, yet would never have believed we would live to see the day, nor have believed the enormity of the truth.”

The coroner met with the police and rescue leaders later that day and confirmed the earlier conclusion that the bodies could not be carried out safely and that the cave should be closed so the bodies were left in place and the entrance had conrecte poured into it to seal it off.
