First-Ever Seal and Unborn Pup Test Positive for Rabies

A groundbreaking discovery of rabies in a Cape fur seal and her unborn pup—the first recorded case in history. On 25 September 2024, SMART volunteers observed a seal displaying concerning neurological symptoms at The Point. With assistance from the Mossel Bay SPCA and Law Enforcement, the seal was safely transported to Hartenbos Animal Hospital, where, sadly, she had to be euthanized. Tests later confirmed rabies in both the mother and fetus.

This rare case underscores the vital role of trained volunteers and marine experts in identifying and addressing threats to wildlife. SMART and their partners worked diligently to ensure the situation was handled safely and effectively.
