Photography is a very important part of any expedition, and it requires to have one man with his mind continually on it, and with an eye to what makes a picture, or opportunities are lost never to return. A primary maxim is, never miss a picture in the hope that the chance will recur under better conditions. Experience in making a photographic record of everchanging scenes is much more important than is generally known; it is not sufficient to be able to handle a camera. A young friend of Simpson's, David Marshall, was finally appointed."

Cecil Thomas Madigan (1889–1947) was probably one of the last great explorers and discoverers. Australian born geologist who had had the luck to participate in several pioneer overseas scientific expeditions (Arctic and Sudan) before he focused on South Australian deserts. His most remarkable accomplishment was the 1939 crossing of the Simpson Desert, described in details in his book "Crossing the Dead Heart", first published in 1946.
