At the beginning of 2024 I set myself a new year's resolution of writing a song a month - these became the "_SAM" songs. After five months I have decided to call time on the regular project, instead focusing on refining what is already in place.

I wanted to reflect on the project, making a retrospective about what has been done and what failed to materialise. I wanted to show some of the process behind making the songs, from the voice notes, scribbled lyric sheets, Reaper DAW project sessions, arrangements typeset in Dorico, and discuss what it even means to write a song. I also talk about success rates in new year's resolutions, Kaplan-Meier curves, starting with why, scaling issues within creative pursuits, the perceived importance of marketing and reach, and the value of defining success (i.e. "definition of done").

As I say at the end of the video - ultimately, I am so proud of the music I have made so far in 2024. While the project hasn't lasted throughout the year, the reasons for why I started the project have been, and so I want to talk about why this cancelled project has been a success to me.

p.s. this is a retrospective about a musical New Year's resolution, not a musical retrospective about a New Year's resolution. Sorry to disappoint.
