In this video, Dr. Mark Mason, a board-certified plastic surgeon with 20 years of experience, discusses different reasons for misshapen breast implants.

Over time, a breast implant patient may notice a change in their implants. An implant is considered a temporary device and it is estimated that a breast implant will last about ten years. There are several reasons that an implant may lose its shape.

The number one cause for needing to exchange your breast implants is a capsular contraction. Capsular contraction is the formation of a "capsule" of scar tissue around any kind of implant (medical or cosmetic) and is a normal part of the healing process. The capsule also assists in keeping the implant in place. There are occasions where the capsule will begin the harden and shrink around the implant. This can cause the implant to lose its shape and pain in the breast.

Another reason to exchange your implants may be due to a leak in the implant. With saline implants, the fluid will leak out, causing the breast to become flat. The fluid will be absorbed by the body leaving just the shell of the implant. This absorption is harmless to the body. If a leak develops in a silicone implant it is not absorbed by the body. Instead, it stays in place due to its cohesive properties until the implant can be changed.

A routine mammogram can also detect an issue with breast implants. The doctor may notice some deformation in the implant during the procedure. If this occurs, you should see your plastic surgeon to determine if there are any issues with your breast implants.
