Why Storm Spirit rushes Guardian Greaves in 7.40c Dota 2

There’s a new meta out now where Midlaners like Storm Spirit and Leshrac are rushing Guardian Greaves. Hi, I’m Torte de Lini and if you haven’t seen it yet, the popularity of Guardian Greaves on Core heroes is not only for Offlaners but also now popular midlaners too. The reason is simple: Guardian Greaves counters enemies who rush Orchid.

In 7.40, Guardian Greaves became a much less team-oriented item BUT it kept a lot of its value for the holder. Guardian Aura no longer gave additional bonus armor to allies and and its additional bonuses are only for the wearer of Guardian Greaves, not for their teammates. In exchange for losing a lot of its team benefits, it is now 750 gold cheaper than before. It now costs 4,300 gold which is a bit closer to Black King Bar’s 4,050 gold.

So why does Storm Spirit and Leshrac go Guardian Greaves? Well, it’s actually quite simple: Guardian Greaves is a great response to their counters: Orchid buyers like Queen of Pain or Atos buyers like Invoker, etc.. Without Greaves, Storm and Leshrac would be fairly ineffectual in the early-to-mid-game where they need to make a lot of space and create map pressure to give relief to their Safe Lane and Offlane allies. Atos and Orchid pins them down and prevents them from using their early-game damage and maneuverability to secure kills on the map.

Okay so why not Eul’s instead? While Eul’s is cheaper by 1,700 gold, you have to look at it from a different perspective: Arcane and Eul’s Scepter is only 300 gold less than Arcanes to Guardian Greaves. What’s more is that Eul’s consumes a very important slot for these mid-lane heroes that scale well into the late-game and need that inventory space over time. Guardian Greaves is more expensive but it fills a slot that Storm or Lesh don’t care as much about, their boots, while also providing a more value in terms of stats: armor, a heal and mana at a lower cooldown than Arcane Boots: 45 seconds instead of 55 seconds. What’s more is that it enables your team to fight in the mid-game thanks to the Guardian Aura and Heal. Don’t forget that Eul’s also costs mana for its dispel whereas Greaves does not.

So does that mean Storm and Leshrac don’t build Black King Bar? Well, no, they may still need to and that’s all the more reason you need to consider inventory space because a Storm Spirit that has to build Parasma, Arcane Boots, Sange & Kaya, Black King Bar, Shiva’s maybe even a Scythe or Aghs Scepter doesn’t want to be bogged down with a Eul’s when his Boots slot can replace that Power Treads with a great dispel. The reason you might still need Black King Bar is because you need it for the team-fight and having to use it just to rid the Orchid means you are wasting precious seconds of that BKB just to reposition so you can engage properly for when the team-fight starts.

So to sum it up, Guardian Greaves can be a great necessary item if you can farm it fast and it helps rid a certain counter debuff that pins you down as a midlaner. Be sure to be mindful if your Offlaner is also going Guardian Greaves and to coordinate who builds what. Don’t forget that Bloodstone also has a dispel for any of you Leshrac enjoyers out there.
