Challenge
In 2019 the Rugby World Cup was held in Japan
As the Springboks official sponsor, FNB wanted to unite the country's support
for our team playing away from home

The Human Connection
All true sports fans wish they could get a closer connection to the players they support.

Solution
Instead of shouting at the TV screens during the live matches, customers could use our special digital tool to deliver their personal messages of encouragement to The Springboks 14,000 KMs away.

Whether it was to give advice, or deliver a pep talk or just ask how the players are feeling – thousands of people across South Africa joined in. Letting the Springboks know that even though they were across the ocean, they were not alone.

Outdoor and digital channels showed how a simple WhatsApp message or video to would make its way into the dressing room and practice areas of the national team.

We developed special technology to deliver and update these messages live on screens during the week leading up to and during the tournament.

We also knew how important it was for the millions of South Africans to see how the Sprinboks re-acted to their messages, so we filmed their responses which in turn were sent back to the fans.


Result
As the World Cup fever captured our country, and with a digital reach of more than 26mill people, we like to think that our WordsofGreatness campaign helped motivate the team to ultimately bring the World Cup home !
