On this Bravo And Brava Italian Americans in Hollywood podcast episode No. 46, hosted by film enthusiasts Daley Giacopella and Sadie Bruni, we celebrate the contribution of actress Ellen Travolta who has left an indelible mark on Hollywood and the American entertainment industry.
Ellen Travolta is an accomplished actress and the eldest sibling of the famed Travolta family. Born on October 6, 1939, in Englewood, New Jersey, Ellen grew up in a vibrant, creative household. She is the daughter of Salvatore "Sam" Travolta, a semi-professional football player and tire salesman, and Helen Cecilia Travolta, an actress and music teacher. Her Italian heritage traces back to Sicily, instilling in her a love for storytelling and performance.
Ellen began her acting career with guest roles in television series such as Medical Center and Marcus Welby, M.D. during the 1970s. Her breakthrough came with her portrayal of Louisa Arcola Delvecchio, Fonzie’s mother, in the hit sitcom Happy Days and its spin-off, Joanie Loves Chachi. She also appeared in the cult classic film The Devil’s Rain (1975) alongside her brother, John Travolta.
In addition to her television success, Ellen’s career includes over 10 films and appearances in more than 30 television shows. She is celebrated for her warmth and relatable characters, which have made her a beloved figure in Hollywood. Today, Ellen focuses on mentoring aspiring actors and participating in community theater, leaving an enduring legacy as an artist and educator.
