When Mary and I first purchased our Catalina 30 sailboat, we were experienced at sailing, but not at docking. Our first several attempts ended in extreme embarrassment. We set out to develop a docking procedure that one person could be successful at every time. Then, if there was a second person, they would provide a safety margin. Our first thought was to utilize a spring line at the beam, but that would result in the bow moving toward the dock and the stern away. We finally settled on using a stern line. That evolved to a stern line that was pre-set to the exact length. The stern line would go from the rear winch, to the dock cleat, and back to the rear winch. We finally tied it to a telescoping boat hook that could be extended out a long way if the wind was blowing us away from the dock. We've enjoyed using this device and it hasn't failed us yet.

Notes:
Extreme caution should be used with this technique to prevent putting too much strain on the winch as it wasn't intended to be a cleat.
Make sure the docking lasso line is in good condition. If the line breaks, it could result in the bow hitting the dock.
