(26 Apr 1971) RR7117A PAKISTAN: BANGLA DESH SECEDES

Bengali leader Sheikh Mujib has been demading
greater autonomy for his country. When he failed to
win concessions from President Yahya Khan during
the March 1971 negotiations, he declared UDI and set
up the state of Bangla Desh. When President Yahya
sent in his army an estimated 35,000 Bengalis were
killed and 250,000 refugees fled to India. Sheikh
Mujib is under arrest. This report shows scenes of
brutality and destruction by the Pakistan Army and
floods of refugees. It also examines the view that the
civil war is not over, but entering a new guerrilla
phase.
