Tesla Hail Damage and Insurance Repair Experience
A Stormy Surprise
It was supposed to be a normal Thursday evening. The skies had darkened a bit, and there were murmurs of an incoming storm, but nothing seemed alarming. I had parked my 2022 Tesla Model 3 outside my workplace, thinking I’d be back out within the hour. I’d parked it in the open many times before without issue. But this time, Mother Nature had other plans.
Around 5 PM, the sky turned an ominous shade of gray. The wind picked up, and within minutes, large chunks of ice began pelting down from the sky. A sudden, violent hailstorm had rolled in—golf-ball-sized hailstones slamming into everything in sight. Employees rushed to windows, watching helplessly as cars took the brunt of the impact. My Tesla was no exception.
The hailstorm lasted no more than 15 minutes, but the damage was severe. I knew Tesla’s aluminum body panels were lighter than traditional steel, making them especially vulnerable to hail damage. I dreaded walking outside. When I finally did, my heart sank. The roof, hood, and trunk were peppered with dents. The glass roof had a few shallow chips, though thankfully not cracked. The side panels were dimpled, and the mirrors had scuffs from the impact.
It was a heartbreaking sight, especially for a car I had taken meticulous care of. But now the question loomed: What comes next?
Assessing the Damage
Once the storm passed and things settled, I began documenting the damage. I took comprehensive photos of every panel, close-ups of the dents, and wide-angle shots to capture the full scope. Teslas aren’t just any car—you can’t take them to just any body shop. I needed a Tesla-approved repair center and advice from someone who had gone through this before.
I contacted Tesla’s roadside assistance—not because the car wasn’t driveable, but to inquire about their recommendations for hail damage. They were helpful and pointed me to the Tesla Certified Collision Center network. I also logged into the Tesla app to check for any error messages or internal diagnostics, but fortunately, nothing critical showed up.
Next, I contacted my insurance company, State Farm, to file a comprehensive claim. Hail damage is usually covered under comprehensive insurance, and thankfully, I had opted for full coverage when I bought the car. The claims process began almost immediately, and within 24 hours, I had an adjuster assigned to my case.
The Insurance Process
Filing a claim was relatively straightforward. Through the insurance app, I uploaded all the photos, provided details of the storm, location, time, and a rough estimate of the extent of the damage. The claim was logged under comprehensive coverage, which didn’t impact my premiums significantly since it wasn't a collision or at-fault claim.
The insurance adjuster contacted me within two days. Due to the scale of the storm, they were handling dozens of similar claims, especially in our area. I was asked to either take the car to a partner inspection site or have a mobile adjuster visit. I chose the latter.
The mobile adjuster arrived three days later and conducted a thorough walkaround of the vehicle. Using a paintless dent repair (PDR) light, they identified over 120 dents across the roof, hood, trunk, and side panels. While the dents weren’t deep enough to damage the paint, there were far too many for a quick fix.
The estimate from the insurance company came in at just under $7,800. This included:
Paintless dent repair for most panels
Replacement of the side mirrors
Light polishing and paint touch-ups where hail had chipped clear coat
Glass roof inspection and protective sealant application
I was relieved the total fell within the coverage limit and that my $500 deductible was the only out-of-pocket expense.
Choosing a Tesla-Certified Body Shop
One of the more difficult aspects was finding a Tesla-certified body shop with availability. Many local shops had long waiting lists due to the sheer volume of hail damage claims in the area.
I finally found an authorized shop about 30 minutes away—Autoworks Collision Center, known for specializing in luxury and electric vehicles. I booked a repair slot for two weeks out, the earliest available.
When I dropped off the car, the technicians conducted a more in-depth inspection. One technician mentioned that Teslas, due to their aluminum body and integrated sensors, require extra care during repairs. Even during paintless dent repair, special tools and techniques must be used to avoid damaging internal wiring, cameras, or the battery pack beneath the floor.
