Описание к видео Ludlow Castle - The Gateway To Wales - History

Recently we visited the fantastic Ludlow Castle in Shropshire. Its history is remarkable. It has played a role in defending England since the Norman Conquest by William the Conqueror in 1066. A castle first stood on this site during the 11th century, and throughout the years it has played host to many sieges, kings and queens and also grand festivities.

The most important part of Ludlow Castle was the defence that it played for England. Ludlow Castle was set up as part of the Marcher Earldoms. This was a series of defences that were established during the Norman period, in order to protect England from the Welsh. Throughout the Tudor Period, Ludlow played host to many of England's most famous kings and queens. Prince Arthur, the son of Henry VII and brother of Henry VIII enjoyed his honeymoon at Ludlow with his wife Catherine of Aragon. Also, Mary I or Bloody Mary would oversee the Council of the Marches too. The Council of the Marches was a group who would oversee Wales, and deal with many different disputes in Wales and also finances. Throughout the English Civil War, Ludlow was besieged by Parliamentarians. Looking back to the Wars of the Roses, it also was the scene of the nearby very bloody Battle of Ludford Bridge, which resulted in a Lancastrian victory for Henry VI.
Even during the Second World War, Ludlow Castle was used for American soldiers to play baseball inside the inner bailey of the castle. Overall it has had a remarkably interesting history. Join us as we show you around, and tell you the history behind, Ludlow Castle, The Gateway to Wales.'
