The Zone of Avoidance is the area of the sky that is obscured by the Milky Way. From the galactic plane of the Milky Way, it spans roughly 10° on either side.

The interstellar dust and stars in the galactic plane obstruct the view of around 20% of the extragalactic sky at visible wavelengths. It is in the direction of the galactic centre. As a result, optical galaxy catalogues are usually incomplete close to the galactic plane.

However, infrared and radiowave can be used to make observations through the zone. Two very large galaxies, Maffei 1 and Maffei 2 have been discovered in the zone.
