Surah At-Takwir (Arabic: سورة التكوير) is the 81st chapter (Surah) of the Holy Qur’an. It consists of 29 verses (Ayahs) and was revealed in Makkah. The Surah is known for its vivid and powerful imagery, depicting the Day of Judgment and the cosmic events that will unfold when the world comes to an end.
🌌 Meaning of the Name
At-Takwir comes from the Arabic root k-w-r, meaning "to wrap" or "to fold." The name refers to the folding up of the sun, which is mentioned in the first verse:
"When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up…" (Qur'an 81:1)
This symbolizes the beginning of the final destruction of the universe.
🌟 Key Themes and Description
Signs of the Day of Judgment (Verses 1–14)
The Surah begins with a series of oaths describing dramatic changes in the natural world:
The sun being folded up
Stars falling and losing their light
Mountains vanishing
Pregnant camels (a symbol of wealth) being neglected
Wild beasts gathering
Seas boiling over
Souls being reunited with their bodies
The questioning of the baby girl buried alive (a reference to pre-Islamic practices)
Accountability and Awareness (Verses 15–25)
It highlights the truth of revelation and the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Affirms that the Qur’an is delivered by Jibreel (Gabriel), a noble messenger, and not the product of any madness or poetry.
Free Will and Consequences (Verses 26–29)
Ends with a reminder that the Qur'an is a reminder to the world and that whoever wills, may take heed.
Ultimately, everything is by Allah’s will.
💡 Important Lessons
The world is temporary, and everything in it will eventually be destroyed.
Every soul will be held accountable for its actions.
Revelation is divine, not human-made.
Injustice, such as killing innocent lives (e.g., baby girls), is strongly condemned.
Prepare for the Hereafter, as the signs of the Day of Judgment are real and terrifying.
