When Russian Jets Intercepted a B-52 Bomber

On July 21, 2024, two Russian fighter jets, a MiG-29 and a MiG-31, intercepted two U.S. Air Force B-52H strategic bombers over the Barents Sea in the Arctic region. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that their fighter jets were deployed to identify aerial targets approaching the country's border and to prevent any airspace violations. After being approached by Russian jets, the U.S. bombers turned away from the Russian border.

This incident adds to the long list of interactions between Russian and NATO military aircraft over the Baltic and Arctic regions. In December 2024, NATO fighter jets intercepted two Russian long-range nuclear-capable bombers over the Baltic during a high-ranking official’s visit to Estonia, highlighting ongoing aerial tensions in the area.
