18 Holes at Bargoed Golf Club. Every shot from my round at a cracking course in the Rhymney Valley

Every shot from my round at Bargoed Golf Club in Bargoed in the Rhymney Valley, South Wales on 26th July 2024.

Another South Wales valleys course with hilltop views? Yes please! After playing several courses of this type I was really keen to visit Bargoed and see what it had to offer. With real life posing challenges at the time I played here, it was great to get out on the course and let the great outdoors clear my head a little.

As with many valleys courses, the approach to the course is often up steep hills and Bargoed is no exception with some exciting steep roads to navigate before arriving at the clubhouse car park. Once there, I was immediately aware of the friendly nature of the staff and members and made to feel welcome as I started off my round.

The course itself has mostly a parkland feel although there are a few more open hilltop style holes, but the blend works very well with very little repetition in feel of the course. The use of the natural contours is very good and together with the breeze when I played, it offered a really good challenge, especially with my slice being more active than usual!

The greens throughout were in fabulous condition and ran well and true. Well struck shots held the greens nicely and good play is rewarded in a very fair manner. As with any tree lined courses, any deviation can be punished and it is done well here, with wayward shots facing a recovery but good shots rewarded.

Many holes have lovely views of the surrounding hills and walking the course is a pleasant experience with only a couple of more demanding hills to navigate. All in all, an excellent enjoyable golfing experience with good value green fees and one which I'd recommend to anyone passing nearby 👍
