Walking along the northern wall of Jerusalem’s Old City is like traveling through layers of history, faith, and living culture. This journey began at the recently reopened Rockefeller Museum, a historic institution showcasing archaeology from across the Land of Israel. From there, the path led toward Herod’s Gate (Sha’ar HaPrahim) and Damascus Gate (Sha’ar Shechem) – two of the eight gates that punctuate the Old City walls. Each gate tells its own story, from ancient defenses to vibrant marketplaces.

Continuing along the wall, I reached the legendary Zedekiah’s Cave, a vast underground quarry steeped in mystery and biblical associations. Further along, just outside the northern wall, lies the Garden Tomb, a serene and beautiful site revered by many Christians as a possible location of Jesus’ burial and resurrection.

This walk was unlike any other – not only for its historical treasures but also for its timing. It was Friday evening, and near Damascus Gate I saw dozens of ultra-Orthodox Jews making their way to the Western Wall for Shabbat prayers. The atmosphere was a living blend of the sacred and the everyday, of tradition and present reality.

Yet the evening took a dramatic turn. A sudden missile alert sounded, warning of a possible attack from the Houthis in Yemen. While there was no visible reaction from the surrounding Arab residents, the moment was a stark reminder that in Jerusalem, history is not only something you walk through – it is something that continues to unfold around you.

This walk along the northern wall revealed more than just ancient stones. It was a living tapestry of Jerusalem’s gates and holy sites, its people and traditions, and the ever-present tension between peace and danger. Join me in exploring these remarkable locations, and experience the Old City as
few have – in a moment when past and present meet under the setting sun of a Jerusalem Friday.
