People have ordered to carry out a caste census, and if Prime Minister Narendra Modi doesn’t do it, another Prime Minister will do it, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said on Saturday.
Mr. Gandhi, addressing an event in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj (Allahabad), asserted that the caste census will be the foundation for policy making and the numbers of every community must be enlisted. He said the arbitrary 50% cap on reservations will be revised so that representation in government and education is fair for all communities.
"90% of the people are not a part of the system. They have the required skill, talent but they are not connected with the system. That's why we are demanding for a caste census," Gandhi said in Prayagraj.
"BJP leaders are saying that an OBC section will be given after caste census...We want the list of different communities. For us caste census is not just a census, it is a foundation for policy making...Just conducting a caste census is not enough, it is also important to understand how the wealth is being distributed...It is also important to find out how much is the participation of OBCs, Dalits, workers in the bureaucracy, judiciary, media?: Rahul Gandhi," he added.
Rahul Gandhi started pressing for a nationwide caste census in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and, with improved numbers in Lok Sabha, the Congress leader has continued to push for it.
