Twenty weeks ago, we made one of my lifelong dreams come true—we adopted a wild mustang from the BLM holding facility. Out of more than 900 horses, we chose a 3-year-old gelding from the Twin Peaks HMA who had been gathered from the High Rock roundup in 2022. There was something about his kind eyes, curious personality, and solid build that stood out.
We brought him home, named him Rooster, and began the journey of building trust. In just a few short months, he went from untouched to haltered, ponied, saddled, and even carrying a rider for the very first time.
In this video, we’re sharing the story of Rooster’s early progress—including his first two clinics with Ty Evans. From the quiet moments of groundwork to being hauled across state lines, exposed to other horses, flags, ropes, and pressure, Rooster made big strides... but not without a few bumps along the way.
At the Bonners Ferry clinic, he struggled with the saddle and pressure in the arena—but we stayed steady and helped him through it. With patience, repetition, and a calm presence, he learned to start managing stress and finding his own regulation.
We believe in staying positive and seeing Rooster not as the horse he is in his hardest moments—but the horse he’s becoming. In this episode, you’ll get a glimpse of how far he’s come and a sneak peek of what’s ahead—including his first two rides and the pack saddle going on.
This is the reality of starting a wild mustang—and we’re honored to bring you along for the journey.
