In Ancient Egypt, residential architecture was directly shaped by environmental conditions and social structure. From the mid–3rd millennium BC onward, the majority of the population lived in mudbrick houses made from a mixture of Nile mud and straw. The limited availability and high cost of materials such as stone and wood played a key role in the widespread use of this building type.

Houses were typically single-story, with thick walls and flat roofs. Small, high-set windows provided natural protection against the hot climate. Flat roofs were also used as sleeping areas during cooler nights. Interior spaces were simple, with woven mats for sleeping, stone hearths for cooking, and clay vessels for storage forming the basic elements of daily life.

Social status was clearly reflected in residential architecture. Homes belonging to the upper classes featured larger rooms, inner courtyards, wall decorations, and, in some cases, small garden areas. These differences demonstrate that architecture in Ancient Egypt was not only functional but also a visible indicator of social hierarchy.
