LIV Golf's Top Earner Makes Failed Attempt to Qualify for US Open Talor Gooch, LIV Golf's highest-paid player and one of its most outspoken figures regarding major championship access, attempted to change his approach this week—but with little success. He entered US Open qualifying on Monday, only to withdraw after playing 15 holes. A native of Oklahoma, Gooch was an original member of the LIV Golf series when it launched in 2022. He quickly became a standout, capturing three victories in 2023 and clinching the individual season title. His strong performances have earned him more than £50 million, making him the leading money-winner in LIV history. But his lucrative move to LIV has come at a cost. Gooch, 33, has failed to qualify for six of the past eight majors due to his slide down the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). Because LIV events don't award ranking points, his world ranking has plummeted from 31st to 1556th. With such a low ranking, Gooch has few paths to enter majors. While special invitations are required for the Masters and PGA Championship—both of which he missed this year—the US Open and The Open offer grueling 36-hole qualifiers for a shot at a spot in the field. In the past, Gooch had shown little interest in these qualifiers, even expressing disdain last year at the idea of trying to play his way into Pinehurst via qualifying. He’s argued that his performance on the LIV circuit should be enough to earn entry into majors. Meanwhile, other LIV players have pursued more proactive routes. Sergio Garcia has regularly competed in qualifiers, and Joaquin Niemann has added numerous non-LIV events to his schedule, an effort that helped earn him special invitations to the last two Masters tournaments.
