How to take a home blood pressure using a wrist cuff

Описание к видео How to take a home blood pressure using a wrist cuff

In celebration of "High Blood Pressure Awareness Month" Brittany and Mariah demonstrate the correct way to take a home blood pressure using a wrist cuff.

In our weight management clinic the wrist cuff is most often used because it best fits all of our patients as opposed to the arm and thigh cuffs that may not properly fit patients with excess weight or obesity.

Recording a home blood pressure is very beneficial for patients with high blood pressure, virtual visits where a blood pressure reading is necessary, or patients who often only experience a high blood pressure in a medical office (this is known as white coat hypertension).

It is important to note that the wrist cuff can run slightly higher than an arm bp measurement by as much as 5-10 mmHg.

Here are 7 steps for correctly taking your blood pressure at home:

1. Sit down in a chair in the upright position with legs uncrossed and back against chair

2. Sit at least 4-5 minutes prior to taking blood pressure reading

3. Using left arm is preferred

4. Keep an open palm (do not clench fist)

5. Keep arm elevated

6. Sit quietly with no talking or moving

7. Record your blood pressure reading
