The Scam of America's Private Health Insurance Monopoly

A few weeks before the 2024 presidential election Robert F Kennedy Jr. gathered together the most influential people in the wide world of wellness and laid out his argument for how he would Make American Healthy Again. The American Health Nutrition Roundtable painted a bleak picture about the state of healthcare—particularly for its anti-vaccine rhetoric—in the United States, but one of their main complaints is worth pausing on for a moment. They all agreed that the root of the problem lied in the systematic corruption of privatized healthcare and insurance that has “systematically destroyed the trust” in institutions of the American people.

Calley Means was more to the point telling private insurance and healthcare employees that “we are coming for you.”

A few weeks later a young healthcare radical named Luigi Mangione shot and killed the CEO of United Healthcare, Brian Thompson on the streets of New York. Before he fired his ghost gun, he inscribed the bullets with the words “Deny, Delay, Depose.”

American’s are enraged at the state of their health system which delivers ever-decreasing health outcomes at ever-increasing costs. It’s the one issue that truly unites both the political left and the political right. A year ago, democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren grilled the United Healthcare executives on their intention to create a “monopoly” our of their business, while also eliminating the ability for patients to access necessary care.

In this week’s video I’m taking a deep dive into the history of American healthcare back to 1910 when a healthcare reformer named Abraham Flexner invented a system to standardize medical education and reform the way that doctors were paid. His revolutionary ideas at the time improved health outcomes, but also laid the foundations for the intractable health system that we endure today.

From there I show how bad the system has really become, and how every ordinary American is in a faustian bargain between insane premiums and the value of life itself.

I’m also spilling the beans on my own decision to exit the health insurance industry entirely and to join a peer-to-peer health cooperative called CrowdHealth which offers a radical new way to pay for health care. I joined CrowdHealth a few weeks before I started working on this video because I was paying an insane $12,000 a year in insurance premiums for a policy that I had no guarantee would cover anything.
