Prohibition, bootleggers, and gangsters have been all the rage lately, so let's go back to September 2024. This is the raw footage we shot after an accidental discovery of a lost bootlegging structure in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, was made by workers during a construction project. We have now added additional information and images for historical context. It was located underneath and between two properties once owned by local bootlegger Andy Richard. While it has been rumored he had Prohibition-era tunnels running through town, this does not appear to be part of something extensive. However, its location makes sense…The building that once sat atop was an auto mechanic garage owned by Richard. Trucks would enter, and rather than having work done, were loaded with illegal booze for transport. The liquor was likely kept in this underground structure, which connects to a nearby house that he also owned. The Atlantic Highlands rum-running syndicate was one of the largest in the United States. It was allegedly orchestrated by Al Lillien, whose mansion headquarters was a mile away near Serpentine Drive. Working for him was Andy Richard, Vito Genovese (who later lived in a small house on the adjacent street), and John Calandriello, known as “Two Gun Johnny”. Could there be more hiding places like this in town? Please check your basements! 😂

The video was originally posted in the fall with permission of the property owner. There is no longer anything to see at the site, and while an amazing find, it is apparently not part of an extensive tunnel system (if one ever existed at all). If there are any, then they are somewhere else. Who knows what might be uncovered in the future.
