Fireworks. Lion dances. Red and gold everywhere.

We can't believe our very first Chinese New Year is happening right here in Malaysia, and it’s a celebration like we’ve never seen before. We didn’t grow up with this holiday—but here, it feels like everyone’s invited.

In this video, we take you inside our experience of celebrating Chinese New Year in Malaysia for the very first time. From the moment decorations started appearing, we were captivated by the color, the energy, and the meaning behind it all. Red for luck and protection. Gold for wealth and prosperity. Together, they symbolize ultimate good fortune, and they’re everywhere—in malls, homes, restaurants, and streets.

As Chinese New Year approached, we were swept into the festive spirit: lanterns hanging from ceilings, giant golden ingots, Chinese character banners, and nonstop discounts. But nothing compared to one of the most exciting parts of the season—the lion dance. With pounding drums, elaborate costumes, and symbolic meaning, the lion is said to scare away evil spirits and bring good luck. We even saw one eat a plate of fruit—was that part of the plan? Who knows, but it was amazing.

This year is the Year of the Snake, and we learned all about the Chinese zodiac system. But did you know that if you’re born in mid-January, your sign might not be what you think? Since Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar, the date shifts every year.

The official celebration lasts 15 days, but with only a few days off of work, most people focus on what really matters: reunion. It’s a time for coming home, for reconnecting with family, and for honoring tradition. That part felt deeply familiar to us—just like Thanksgiving or Christmas back in the U.S.

We were lucky to be welcomed into a few homes for the celebration, and one highlight was trying lou sang, also known as prosperity toss salad. Everyone grabs chopsticks and tosses the salad high into the air, shouting out good wishes for the year ahead. The higher you toss, the better your luck. It’s chaotic. It’s joyful. It’s delicious.

Even though we were thousands of miles from home, we felt something universal in this holiday. A shared hope for a better year. A sense of togetherness. A celebration of life.

Chinese New Year in Malaysia is something we’ll never forget. Bold, beautiful, and full of heart—it made us feel more at home than we ever expected.
