City Description:
Ouro Preto is a colonial town in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains of eastern Brazil. It’s known for its baroque architecture, including bridges, fountains and squares, and its steep, winding cobbled streets. Central Tiradentes Square is named after the martyr for Brazilian independence. There are numerous churches and chapels all over town, including the 18th-century St. Francis of Assisi Church. The Museum of Aleijadinho displays sacred artworks and pays tribute to Antônio Francisco Lisboa, one of Brazil’s leading baroque artists. Its collection is displayed across 3 churches: Our Lady of Conception, St. Francis of Assisi, and Our Lady of Mercy and Pardons. Ouro Preto was an 18th-century gold-mining hub, and some now-exhausted mines are open to the public, including Chico Rei and Jeje in the east and Veloso in the west. Several lookouts, including Morro São Sebastião lookout in the north, offer sweeping views across the town’s hilly terrain.

Weather and Events:
Ouro Preto is a year-round destination. Peak season is Jan–Apr, even though rainfall levels may be higher. The climate is warm, but overnight temperatures can feel cool during the winter months (Jun–Aug). The town is busiest on weekends and holidays. During Brazil’s annual Carnival festival (Feb/Mar), there are concerts, parties and colorful street parades.
