In this parody of the Sherlock Holmes story, it's Watson who is the real genius and has hired an actor to play the part of Sherlock Holmes, a character he created. Watson is continually frustrated by Holmes, a drunk actor who greatly enjoys his fame, but is not nearly as smart as Watson. To make matters worse, no one will take Watson seriously on his own and now needs Holmes in order to get anyone to listen to him.

This is a scene from the movie where they are annoyed at each other (as always). They are eating dinner in a small village where they are investigating. The men in the bar recognize Holmes and none of them even acknowledge Watson's presence. As an actor, Holmes continues to dazzle the gullible people around him and is happy to get a few free drinks from the deal.
