In this video CHRIS GREGORY, the author of DETERMINED TO STAND: THE REINVENTION OF BOB DYLAN will be talking about the background to and the ideas involved in his latest book MINSTREL BOY: THE METAMORPHOSES OF BOB DYLAN.
This is the second volume in his 'trilogy in reverse; BOB DYLAN: PICASSO OF SONG and covers the years from THE BASEMENT TAPES in 1967 to UNDER THE RED SKY in 1990, taking in all the changes of fame, fortune, acclaim, shock and rejection that he
encountered during these years. The book includes detailed analyses of all the songs (including unreleased material) from this period. It is the first book to do a 'proper deep dive' into THE BASEMENT TAPES - some of those nonsense songs make more sense than you might imagine! It traces Dylan's RETREAT into his 'pastoral period' when he retreated from the mainstream to make 'simpler' country srtyle music, discusses his involvement in the films PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID and the criminally underrated RENALDO AND CLARA and looks at his RETURN to the mass arena with his tours of 1974, 75/6 and 78. The songs of his mid 70s trilogy BLOOD ON THE TRACKS, DESIRE and STREET LEGAL are given considerable prominence. The latter part of the book iscalled REBIRTH and examines the songs and cultural reverberations of his religious conversion in the late 1970s and early 80s, while going on to look at his 'difficult' years of the 1980s, which culminated in the 'comeback' albums- OH MERCY and the (also underrated) UNDER THE RED SKY. There is even a spirited defence of the infamous WIGGLE WIGGLE!!
Chris intersperses the analytical and biographical detail with lively accounts of a number of key live performances during this period, including gigs on the 74 Stadium Tour , the Rolling Thunder Revue, the 'Vegas Tour' of 78, the confrontational shows when he began 'preaching' on stage and his later encounters with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Grateful Dead and the Traveling Wilburys.
The trilogy is intended for potential use for the growing number of those who now study Dylan's work but is written in a style that combines literary, musical and linguistic analysis with a good degree of humour and levity. Bob is, of course, a very funny writer - a fact that some of the more po faced commentators have chosen to ignore! So the books are very readable by a general audience. Chris is also a poet and novelist and brings these skills to the party! They can be read in an 'interactive' style - read a bit, listen to a song, read a bit more etc...
