Ussama Makdisi, Noa Avishag Schnall and William Dalrymple in conversation with William Sieghart
Ussama Makdisi is the inaugural May Ziadeh Chair in Palestinian and Arab Studies and Professor of History at the University of California Berkeley. His most recent book is Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World. Ussama co-hosts the Makdisi Street podcast.
Noa Avishag Schnall is a Yemeni author, journalist, photographer, and human rights activist based in Paris, born and raised in Los Angeles. Her work spans multiple continents, focusing on amplifying stories of justice, resistance, and cultural celebration while collaborating with underrepresented communities. Her writing and photography have been published internationally across news, arts, and culture outlets. Recently, she sailed with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition aboard The Conscience as part of a mission to break the siege on Gaza.
William Dalrymple is the author of the Wolfson Prize-winning White Mughals, Duff Cooper Prize-winning The Last Mughal, and the Hemingway and Kapuscinski Prize-winning Return of a King. His book, The Anarchy, was shortlisted for the Duke of Wellington medal, the Tata Book of the Year, and the Historical Writers Association Award, and won the 2020 Arthur Ross Medal from the US Council on Foreign Relations. Dalrymple has held visiting lectureships at Princeton, Brown, and Oxford, where he is currently a Visiting Fellow at All Souls. He was presented with the President’s Medal by the British Academy and was named one of the world’s top 50 thinkers for 2020 by Prospect Magazine. He is a founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival.
William Sieghart is a renowned poet, publisher, and arts advocate. He founded the Forward Prizes for Poetry in 1991 and National Poetry Day with the BBC in 1993, now the BBC’s longest-standing arts partnership after the Proms. Author of three volumes of The Poetry Pharmacy, he has toured widely, offering poetry prescriptions to thousands. An inspirational speaker, he has appeared at TEDx, 5x15, literary festivals, and corporate events. Chair of the Henry Smith Charity, he spearheaded initiatives like StreetSmart, raising over £12m for London’s homeless. He has contributed to British libraries, Somerset House, the London 2012 Olympics, and peace initiatives in the Middle East.
