This is really a fun song to play with this very catchy groove!

Lots of syncopation here! Most of the time the accents of the groove are on the second 8th note of the fourth beat, or on the second 8th note of the second beat. This makes the groove of the mainriff in the Chorus work.

And of course the accents in the Verse are also most of the time syncopated. And I really like the opposite effect of the bassline in the Bridge where Nathan East plays a steady 8th beat (and of course with syncopation on the fourth (and sometimes second) beat.

I also like the subtle slides towards the F note. Listen/look for instance at bar 24 (but there are many of them in this song). It isn’t a ‘in your face’ slide, but it gives a subtle feel to this part of the groove.

Especially during the guitar solo Nathan East plays some very beautiful licks. The slides are more obvious here. He also uses the low F note (on the E-string) more than in the rest of the song which gives a contrast with the high (sometimes slapped) Db and Eb notes.

An other nice detail is that he holds the high Gb note (on the D-string) while playing the lower Gb notes (on the E-string), and then holds the low Gb note while playing the higher Gb notes.

Because of the many syncopations in this song I help myself by putting one of my righthand fingers on a string (giving it a rest) and then play the syncopated note. You might see more movement in my right hand than you hear!

I play this song on a Ibanez SR605E with roundwound strings in active mode. Standard tuning: E-A-D-G. Although this is a 5-string bass I only use 4 strings (not the low B-string). No effects used.

Bass: Nathan East
Album: Chinese Wall (Philip Bailey 1984)
Composers: Philip Bailey, Phil Collins, Nathan East
