The very last game on the Game Gear/Master System for Sonic was Sonic Blast. The game was released in 1996. To put that into perspective, games such as Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot and Resident Evil now existed, so being late into the Game Gear/Master System's lifecycle is a huge understatement. Sega decided to make a game with pre-rendered graphics, given the recent success with Donkey Kong Country and wanted to try it with Sonic. Sensible move. However, in typical Sega fashion, they experiment and develop one onto a heavily outdated 8 bit console! The result is this game. No Tails this time but you CAN play as Knuckles!

While it certainly isn't as memorable as the other Sonic games on the system, it isn't an awful game. But very mediocre with sluggish movement, control and weird difficulty spikes. This last problem wasn't new to Game Gear games. Sonic 2 was too hard, Sonic Chaos was too easy but Triple Trouble got it perfect so don't know why they couldn't get it right here. But here is my playthrough of me beating the game with Sonic, all Chaos Emeralds and No Deaths. The 8 bit series of Sonic games is now complete!
