Most of us heard the news that Hostess Brand is going out of business after 82 years of making our favorite snack cakes. Thanks to the bakers who went on strike this week, not only did they lose their jobs, but they put the final nail on the coffin of Hostess. RIP Hostess, snacking will never be the same without you!
Hostess Brands, Inc.—founded as Interstate Bakeries Corporation (IBC) in 1930—was a wholesale baker and distributor of bakery products in the United States, until it closed its doors on November 16, 2012 in the wake of a crippling BCTGM bakers' union strike and began liquidation proceedings. It is the owner of the Hostess, Wonder Bread, Nature's Pride, Dolly Madison, Butternut Breads, and Drake's brands.
For many years it was based at 12 East Armour Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri. In 2009, after it emerged from a 2004 bankruptcy, the name was changed to Hostess Brands, Inc., and the headquarters moved to Irving, Texas. Hostess Brands, Inc. sought bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11, Title 11, United States Code again in 2012.
On November 16, 2012, management announced that it has filed a motion in United States Bankruptcy Court in White Plains, N.Y. seeking permission to close its business and sell its assets. A hearing was set for November 10 at 2 p.m.[clarification needed] Two days earlier it warned Hostess would liquidate unless the bakers, who were striking in protest against a new contract imposed in bankruptcy court, returned to work. Management intends to sell all assets and lay off 18,500 employees.
