A glacier burst in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Ghizer district early Friday triggered flash floods that blocked the Ghizer River for several hours and caused large-scale devastation in #Talidas village of #Gupis Valley.

According to officials, the flooding began around 3:30am after a lake formed by the Gularir Glacier suddenly burst. The floods swept through low-lying areas, washing away houses, farmland and livestock. Residents said nearly 80 per cent of Talidas village was destroyed, leaving dozens of families homeless.
The locals said that shepherds living near the glacier managed to alert villagers through mobile phones, allowing many to evacuate in time. However, the sudden surge of water created an artificial lake, cutting off routes and leaving people trapped in Roshan village. After several hours, they were able to reach safer areas.
Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), Rescue 1122 and local administration teams are carrying out relief operations, while the Pakistan Army has also launched rescue missions using helicopters to evacuate people and deliver food supplie
