The Enterprise is assigned to transport the Medusan ambassador Kollos and his aide Dr. Miranda Jones back to the ambassador's home planet. Logistically this transport is not as straightforward as one would expect as the very sight of a Medusan by the eyes of a human have been know to result in madness and even death; for that reason, Kollos is expected to remain in his quarters for the duration of the voyage.

For a human, Miranda is a rarety in that she is a proven telepath, a talent that was nurtured through her residency and education on Vulcan; much of her character and outlook could be seen as being closer to that of Vulcan than human, nonetheless several of the male members of the Enterprise command staff find themselves more than a little taken with her and invite her to a formal dinner. During the after dinner chit-chat the table debate ugliness versus beauty, good versus bad; obviously both she and Spock agree that such perceptions are purely subjective and that the presumption of any links between that which is beatuiful and that which is good are futile connections.
