Building a Thatch House with Water Reed: Bushcraft Saxon House (PART 10)

Описание к видео Building a Thatch House with Water Reed: Bushcraft Saxon House (PART 10)

We continue to build a log house in the woods using hand tools. We finish the thatch on the roof of the bushcraft saxon house. Using our hands and a piece of flat wood, we blend the thatching of the roof to make it better for rain to run off. I then climb the wood ladder to the top of the roof and tie in the ridge rolls ready for the final part of the roof build. Dad then mixes clay, straw and water and starts work on building the clay walls inside the shelter. We get a fire going and cook whitebait with fresh vegetables. With the thatch roof of the anglo saxon house almost complete, we will start more work on the interior and adding some saxon furniture.
Thatching with water reed is an incredibly rewarding experience. It is also very tricky and labour intensive. But it makes you appreciate how our ancestors built their houses and the skills they developed doing so, often using minimal tools if not no tools at all. It will be interesting to see how the thatch will hold up in strong wind and heavy rain. The foundation of the log house is strong, with mortise and tenon joints and the post and beam structure being buried in the ground with the ends of the logs burnt to protect them from moisture and rot. We can't wait to spend more time adding to this saxon grubenhaus! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to get notified of the next episode :)
