India stands on the brink of developing its first fifth-generation fighter jet — the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

However, achieving true fifth-generation status is no small feat. Several major challenges must be overcome, and unless they are addressed, the AMCA risks being downgraded to a 4.5-generation platform, similar to the Tejas Mk2.

Here are the six biggest challenges India faces in making the AMCA a reality:

1. Jet Engine Development

The AMCA requires a low-bypass afterburning turbofan capable of producing 110–120 kN of thrust. This engine must support supercruise (sustained supersonic flight without afterburner) and feature a low infrared signature for stealth.

Currently, Safran (France) and Rolls-Royce (UK) have shown interest in partnering for the engine. But the real question lies in intellectual property (IP) rights. For long-term strategic autonomy, India must secure full rights to the technology so it can be freely used, upgraded, and produced domestically in the future.

2. Stealth Material and Coating

Stealth coating — which drastically reduces a fighter jet’s radar cross-section — is among the most closely guarded military technologies in the world. Only the USA, China, and Russia have mastered it.
