"Pietra Leccese" is a type of limestone, containing clay and organic materials (often seashells and fossils), of straw yellow colour and porous appearance, soft to the touch and amenable to the chisel.

In southern Salento (Italy), and in particular in Cursi (Lecce), it is possible to see open pit quarries for the extraction of this rock, such as the one in this video.

In the last few centuries, from 1500 onwards, this stone has been widely employed as a construction and decorative material; skillfully modelled and carved by local artists, it has enabled the "Barocco Leccese" style to thrive in Lecce and surrounding areas.
