This vintage appliance sales film; “Glenn Riggs Inc. Admiral Refrigerator” is a training tool designed for Admiral Appliance sales representatives. The film does unfortunately include some fairly sexist 1950’s perspectives on selling home goods to housewives. It was created to help sales representatives build a targeted sales story for consumer individual needs. It stresses the need for personalization and emotional connection in order to enhance customer satisfaction and outcomes.

00:00 The narrator opens the film addressing viewers intended to be sales representatives (:09). He shows a blackboard (:23) to be used throughout the film in order to show various steps of the sales process emphasizing key strategies such as convenience, exclusive features, automatic defrosting, personalization and comparison to competitor models. An example is introduced of Glenn Riggs pitching a sale to Mrs. Williams (:47). Glenn begins his address to Mrs. Williams (1:08) offering compliments and kind gestures such as taking the parcels from her hands, her jacket from her back (1:10) and offering her coffee (1:44). Mrs. Williams sits in front of an advertisement poster. The first portion of the sales pitch is designed to make the customer feel important, he targets aspects about her life including her residency and its distance from the local grocery store (2:14). The instructor notes the first two points are to uncover who she is and what her needs are (2:29). Throughout their discussion Glenn is aware of various appliances which might benefit her life including the Admiral Air conditioner (3:05). Mrs. Williams asks about electric ranges (3:20). She reflects on Glenn’s sales pitch highlighting positive and negative aspects (4:18). After the customer is tuned into the sales story (5:40), the product is introduced (5:49). The sales model instructs the representative to avoid asking questions the customer might be able to respond negatively to (5:56). Fairly sexist ideals follow including the notion the female customer is less likely to be interested in technical aspects of the product (6:31). The instructor notes to inform the customer what the product does and not what it is (6:51) and later “how it does it”. A demonstration shows better preservation of sliced and uncovered tomatoes in the Admiral Dual Temp Refrigerator which debuted in 1947 (7:51). Glenn stands by a 1954 Admiral refrigerator unit (8:35). A demonstration follows of how to use the automatic defrost mechanism within the freezer compared to the old chip away method in a competitor model (9:01). The pair look at the interior of the refrigerator (9:55). Glenn compares the automatic defrost mechanism to a clock defroster (9:14). The next phase of the sales pitch (9:52) touches on techniques such as ‘trading up’ (10:20). Glenn shows off various features including extra storage space (11:17) enabling fewer grocery trips and aspects which enable easy cleaning (11:27). He points to the freezer drawer (11:40), a storage tray doubling as a serving tray (12:17) and egg racks (13:09) within in the door. Narration explains choice words when delivering the sales pitch (14:16). Mrs. Williams stands by the 1954 Admiral Up-Side-Down Refrigerator (14:54). Mrs. Williams begins a demonstration using 122 pounds of groceries (16:47) fitting easily into the freezer compartment. Glenn shows off a 1954 Admiral Duel Temp model (18:15) noting the dry cold area (18:56). Glenn and Muriel use a spread of foods from a buffet luncheon (19:06) for demonstration. The final segment summarizes key points throughout the sales pitch (21:58) stressing the main goal of the salesman is to keep the customer engaged throughout the decision-making process. A final note informs viewers they can reach out directly to Admiral of Chicago with questions and inquiries (24:58). The company motto closes the film (25:03). This was a Transfilm Production (25:07).

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
