U.S. prosecutors say self-proclaimed hackers have stolen evidence related to the Russia probe and spread it around online. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office calls it an attempt to tarnish the investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election. Eve Johnson reports.
Russia is still meddling in U.S. politics according to the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

U.S. prosecutors say evidence linked to its Russia probe has been stolen and spread around online in an attempt to tarnish their investigation.

The news came to light in a court filing in Washington on Wednesday (January 30).

U.S. prosecutors are locked in a dispute with attorneys for a company called Concord over how to share highly sensitive evidence.

Concord is under investigation for bankrolling a Russian propaganda campaign to tip the 2016 election in favor of Donald Trump.

In the filing, prosecutors said that a Twitter user - @HackingRedstone - bragged about hacking evidence in the case last October and tweeted out a internet link with the message: "enjoy the reading."

The link led to what seemed to be documents from Mueller's team.

But prosecutors say the files had been doctored - and changed so as to discredit their investigation.

The FBI says the account's IP address originated in Russia.

So far, Mueller has indicted 13 Russians and three Russian companies, including Concord.

He is also looking into whether members of the Trump campaign co-ordinated with Moscow.

The Kremlin denies it meddled in the elections and President Trump has called the inquiry a political witch hunt.

The investigation is close to wrapping up according to acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker.
