Apple TV 4K Successor: New Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Chip + A17 Pro Processor Coming in 2025
Apple’s next-generation Apple TV 4K is on the horizon, and it looks like some major updates are coming with it. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to launch a new, Apple-made Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip, which will replace the current chips provided by Broadcom. This chip will first be featured in the Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini, expected to launch in 2025. If this development comes to fruition, it could significantly enhance the performance and connectivity of these devices.
Why is this important? Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips are crucial for Apple devices. The Wi-Fi chip connects the Apple TV to the internet, enabling users to stream content, download apps, and play games. Bluetooth, on the other hand, lets you pair accessories like remotes and game controllers. By developing its own chips, Apple will not only have more control over these critical components but could also improve the overall smart home ecosystem by syncing devices more efficiently.
In addition to the new chip, there are rumors that the next-gen Apple TV 4K could feature an upgraded processor—possibly the A17 Pro chip, which would power new Apple Intelligence features. It’s also been suggested that Apple might drop the price of the 64GB Apple TV model below the current $129 price tag, making it more affordable for a wider range of consumers.
Apple might even introduce a built-in camera for gesture controls, a feature that could make losing the remote a thing of the past. Although the camera rumor is speculative, it’s part of a larger trend of Apple pushing into smart home technology with new products, including a home hub with a display and a home security camera launching next year.
Beyond the Apple TV, the new chip is also expected to make its way into other Apple devices, including the iPhone (in 2025) and iPad and Mac (in 2026). This shift aligns with Apple’s strategy of developing its own components—like the custom Apple Silicon chips—which could help the company create thinner iPhones and wearables while gaining more control over its technology. However, this transition does come with risks, as Apple will be relying on its untested wireless technology. But given the company’s track record, we can expect some exciting advancements in the smart home and mobile tech space.
