Once four friends started a business of cotton. They owned a godown in Hampi for storage of cotton bales. Finding that cotton saplings attracted large number of rats to the godown) a brisk and invigorating cat was introduced by them collectively to check the rodent menace.)

All All four friends loved the cat so much that they assigned to themselves one foot each of the cat for decorating it with pair of gold jingles. As a result, each foot of the cat was bejewelled with gold jingles and regularly looked after by the respective caretaker of the cat's foot so assigned. Soon, the cat outdid its job and marvelled in keeping the rats at bay. Once, while performing its duties, the cat jumped from the top of a pile of bales. As started limping on one foot. So, the friends applied some balm and tied a long strip of muslin cloth as bandage around the wounded fooh soon the bandage got loose and the cat unaware of the long narrow cloth that was trailing behind it, sat near the fireplace, and when the cloth began to burn, tran helter-skelter and fled into the godown itself, where the entire stock of cotton was reduced to ashes in a moment)

As all four friends had assigned one foot each of the cat to themselves, the injured foot belonged to one of them So, the other three friends charged him with the damages, which they claimed from him desperately. The troubled friend asserted his innocence and defended himself by stating that the entire episode was just an accident for which no one should be held responsible, but the othe three insisted to claim the damages from him.

The matter went to the Royal Court for settlement and hearing the arguments from both the sides, King Krishnadeva Räya entrusted Tenali Raman to decide the case thoughtfully and thereby maintain the sanctity of the Imperial Court.

Tenali thoroughly analysed the event that had happened and announced "The injured feet had no responsibility, for it was taken into the godown with the trail of fire by the other three healthy feet. So, the damages have to be paid by the owners of the healthy feet to the owner of the limping foot! foot!"

On listening to the judgment, the three friends were taken aback and realised their fault of acting cunningly. The King appreciated the reasoned decision of Tenali and reprimanded the three for their misconduct.
