Various voyages serving as engineer for Houlder Bros and bank Line on world wide voyages 1969 till 1974. Mainly on diesel powered general cargo ships.
The first ship on the slideshow is the Royston Grange in Royal Victoria dock London. This ship was usually on a run from London to RIver Plate for beef both chilled and frozen from Argentina. as it was on a regular service which could also include Rotterdam, when the ship got to London the crew would go home for three weeks or so and reliefs would work on the ship as it did about a three month round trip. On May 11th 1972 whilst I was on the Shaftesbury on a run to Central America the Royston Grange was in collision with a tanker in the River Plate off Montevideo and caught fire resulting in total loss of life 63 crew and 10 passengers also an Argentinian pilot.
The tanker Tien Chee also had 8 out of 40 crew killed.
The Royston Grange also had some butter as cargo which ignited from the oil on the tanker. A sad day for British shipping.
