Parallel circuits

Reminder
There are two ways of connecting circuit components together. They may be connected in series or in parallel.

First-hand investigation

A group of students connect three resistors in parallel with a 9V battery. They use three ammeters and three voltmeters.

Current in a parallel circuit

Hence the total amount of current flowing into (and out of) a parallel combination is equal to the sum of the currents that flow in each of the parallel branches:

Voltage in a parallel circuit

Because each parallel branch starts and finishes at the same point in the circuit, the voltage difference across each parallel circuit branch must be identical.
Hence, the total voltage across a parallel combination is equal to the voltage across any of the branches:

The total resistance of a parallel combination of resistors.

Adding a parallel path increases the total amount of current flows and will always reduce the total resistance. The total resistance of a parallel combination must always be less than any of the individual resistances in the combination. To show this, we can combine Ohm’s Law with the equations for parallel circuits above.
