A massive protest broke out at Dhing in Assam’s Nagaon district after a class 10 student was allegedly gang-raped by three persons on August 22 evening. According to police, the girl was found lying near a pond in semi-conscious condition and was rescued by locals. The 14-year-old was returning from tuition on her bicycle when the incident took place.

On Friday hundreds of protesters took to the streets demanding immediate arrest and action against the rapists. Several organisations called a bandh in Dhing town in order to register their protest against the incident while calling the incident a crime against humanity. The protestors also called for an indefinite shutdown of shops and business establishments until strict action is taken against the culprits.

Assam Director General of Police GP Singh visited Dhing on Friday and assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice soon. He also informed that a suspect has been detained and there is sufficient evidence against him.

Condemning the incident, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X to say, “We will NOT SPARE anyone & BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE.”
