"My name is Andreas Barratt-Due, and I’m working asa consultant at the intensive care unit at Oslo University hospital and will hereby on behalf of all co-authors present the results from the NOR-Solidarity trial.

When we realized that the whole world, including Norway, would be hit by the Covid 19 pandemic there was an immense motivation among the treating physicians to contribute to research, preferentially in a clinical trial.

A clinical study examining the efficacy of interventional drugs to Covid 19 hospitalized patients in Norway, would be a small study not able to conclude. Thus, we were motivated to take part in something bigger than ourselves and joined the WHO Solidarity trial. The enthusiasm at home was great, and all 23 hospitals that joined the study in Norwayestablished a national add-on trial with great backup from regulatory authorities that had speeded up the legal and administrative procedures.

In contrast to WHO Solidarity and other large research platforms like Recovery, our national add-ontrial, has a more complex study design including biobanking and closer follow-up and monitoring of the patients.Biobanking is very important and can tell us why the treatment worked or did not, and thereby establish important knowledge for future planned studies.

Intervention:
Hardly any clinical evidence could back the selection of the interventional drugs: hydroxychloroquine and remdesivir. However, some preclinical results suggested possible mechanisms of action and thus advocated their use in a clinical trial. The use non-documented drugs iswidespread across the entire globe, underscoring the need for large trials to confirm or reject their efficacy.

Results of greatest interest:
We measured viral load in oropharyngeal samples in hospitalized patients. Remdesivir is red, HCQ blue and SoCis gray.No increased decline rate of SARS-CoV-2 was observed in any of the interventional groups compared with Standard of Care.

Additionally, sub-analyses showed that the anti-viral effect was independent oftime since symptom onset, and viral load at hospital admission.Similar results were demonstrated for HCQ.

The WHO Solidarity trial showed no effect of Remdesvir and HCQ on in-hospital mortality. Herein we show that these drugs have no anti-viral effects on SARS-CoV-2 in hospitalized patients.
